REFLECTION: AN EVENING WITH UTP LOYAL PARTNERS AND THE LAUNCH OF UTP SECOND GAMELAN ALBUM

Kuala Lumpur, 8 December 2017- Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) today organised a “Reflection. An Evening with Loyal Partners” to celebrate the university’s partnership with the industry, sponsors, collaborators and stakeholders.

The event was also organised to express UTP’s gratitude and appreciation for their contributions and support towards UTP’s growth and development.

UTP is constantly expanding and growing its network and collaborative efforts in the realisation that one of the keys for growth is working together with the right partners.

UTP’s linkages with various industries and institutions both locally and abroad remains pivotal in contributing towards its achievements and recognition in teaching and learning the quality of academic programmes and research.

These partnerships have also helped UTP in student sponsorships, R&D collaborations, software donations, placement for student industrial internship programmes, job opportunities for its graduates and contribution towards Yayasan UTP.

At the same event, UTP also launched its second gamelan album in conjunction with the university’s 20th anniversary celebration this year.

Entitled “Gatra Kedua”, the album comprises nine (9) songs that capture the beauty of Gamelan music. All songs are performed by UTP’s very own gamelan group, Sanggar Kirana. it has a membership of 30 students from science, engineering and technology programmes.

The album is produced as a testament of UTP’s vision of producing well-rounded graduates who do not only excel in academics but also in arts and culture.

It is also produced to encourage the public, especially the young generation, to appreciate Gamelan music.

The ensemble’s first music album, ‘Gatra Pertama’ was launched in 2013, the first ever gamelan album produced in Malaysia by university students.

UTP has improved its standing in the 08 Asia University Rankings 2017, moving up 26 places, and is now ranked Top 101.

About UTP Gamelan Group Sanggar Kirana 》

The UTP Gamelan Group Sanggar Kirana was established in 2002 to promote Malaysian culture. develop traditional music and instill arts and music skills among varsity students. This year the group celebrates its 15 years of establishment.

The ensemble consists of 30 students under the baton of Zaidin Mohd Nor and Teuku Umar llany Teuku lskandar.

Since its inception, the team has been involved in performances and events for the university. PETRONAS, and the state government. It participated in the International Gamelan Festival at Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 2008, Malaysia Night 2015 in London, United Kingdom and Taste of Malaysian Culture in Nottingham, United Kingdom in 2015.

The ensemble’s first music album, Gatra Pertama, was launched in 2013 with the full support from the management of UTP, marking it as the first ever gamelan album produced in Malaysia by university students.
